    Family restaurant ~20km west at the foot of the Pyramidenkogel tower, with a large safe playground, big portions and fair prices.

    Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Smoking is allowed in the outdoor seating, which is unpleasant with children. Busy at weekends.

    Cinema, bowling lanes, pool tables and a small arcade in one complex east of the centre, with free parking. Bowling is the best-run part.

    The cinema half feels half-lit and deserted, and the restaurants in the complex close at weekends.

  2. KrümelchenPlay cafe

    The parent-and-child cafe for the Klagenfurt-Villach area, spacious and clean with healthy food and friendly staff. Also does birthday packages.

    Expensive: around 54 EUR for two children for three hours, and drinks including water are charged separately. Closed Mondays and mornings only. Service slows badly when busy.

  3. LINDILAND Rutar KlagenfurtIndoor playground

    Free indoor playground inside the Rutar furniture store, with a slide, ball pit and climbing structures, seating for parents and a restaurant and toilets next door. A good bad-weather fallback.

    Closes at 4pm even though the store stays open longer. No staff supervision; parents watch their own children.

    Indoor and outdoor children's birthday venue with a well-kept football-golf course, run by hands-on owners.

    Party bookings rather than drop-in; contact them to arrange.

    Very large free playground inside the Europapark by the lake, with play equipment for every age, outdoor gym, picnic areas, clean toilets and a cycle path along the canal.

    The big Wörthersee lido at the end of the Lendkanal: sandy kids' play area, jetties at different depths, a water slide, restaurants, changing cabins and paddleboard rental.

    Summer season. Food on site is expensive; picnics are allowed. The water slide is often out of service.

  2. Strandbad LorettoLido

    Smaller, grassier lakeside bath close to the centre with shallow water, four jetties and a sand playground. Quieter than the main Strandbad and mostly locals.

    Summer season. Parking is difficult on busy Saturdays.

    Small, quiet and cheap bouldering hall with plenty of routes at the easier end, so a good first climbing hall for kids. Clean changing rooms and showers.

    Not large. After 4pm entry is via the youth hostel next door.

    Indoor hall filled with white sand for beach volleyball and play, with a side room for breaks. Also bookable for birthdays and occasional kids' beach parties.

    Book online. Limited to what you make of the sand; repeat visits wear thin.

  3. JUMP DOME KlagenfurtTrampoline park

    Large, well-kept trampoline park with parkour tracks and varied jumping zones, rarely feeling crowded. One free hour with the Kärnten Card.

    Pricey: roughly 75 EUR for one adult and two children for an hour. Book online even on quiet days. No water fountains; bring your own.

  4. Megapoint SkatehalleSkate / BMX / roller

    Indoor skatepark in the exhibition grounds built by IOU Ramps: quarters, ledges, banks, rails, a funbox and a mini ramp.

    Session times are not posted online; contact them before going.

  5. Skatepark FeschnigSkate / BMX / roller

    Modern concrete park north of the city combined with a full playground and a ball hockey court, so different ages are covered at once. Shaded by trees, with a drinking fountain and parking.

    No toilet on site.

    Music school and rehearsal rooms with a strong kids' programme and a summer festival the students play at. Clean rooms, well-equipped.

    Weekdays only. Lessons are course-based rather than drop-in.

    Miniature-world park by the Wörthersee with several hundred detailed models, many of them animated: moving trains, cranes loading ships, working mills. Large free car park.

    Around 21 EUR for adults, which is steep for what is essentially a garden of models. Allow 1-2 hours; older children get bored faster than you expect.

    Ceramic painting studio on the old square, welcoming to children, with a good spread of blanks from cheap to larger pieces and a loyalty card.

    Open Wednesday to Saturday only and just four tables; reserve well ahead. Each piece takes an hour or more.

  1. Tierpark RoseggWildlife park

    Wildlife park ~30km west below Rosegg castle where deer, goats and donkeys roam free and can be hand-fed, with a playground, restaurant and toilets inside. Two to three hours.

    Cards not always accepted at the buffet. Hilly in parts; the far loop is a lot for small children.
