    Mountain hut at 1067m above the city with a playground and a big view, reachable on foot from Hungerburg. Simple Austrian food, cards accepted.

    Closed Mondays. It is a genuine uphill walk; allow around an hour from the funicular.

    Country inn in Igls with indoor and outdoor seating, drawing supplies and games brought to the table for children, and patient staff.

    Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

    Family inn on a plateau ~7km south-west with mountain views, ponies on the property and easy walks from the door. Good traditional food.

    Modern bowling centre east of the centre with well-kept lanes, a decent option for older kids on a wet day.

    Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The online booking form is unreliable; phone to reserve. Sometimes shuts earlier than posted.

  2. HAPPYHOPP KinderparadiesIndoor playground

    Large multi-level indoor playground ~30km east in the Inn valley, with a separate under-5 area of ball pits, small trampolines and slides, plus a climbing volcano and ball cannons for older kids.

    Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Cards not accepted, debit only. Food is fried and sugary; no fruit.

  3. Joy das KinderparadiesIndoor playground

    Big indoor play centre next to the Cyta shopping centre in Völs, ~6km west. Clean, with indoor and outdoor eating areas and adults free with a paying child.

    Over-2s pay full entry. Outside food is not allowed. The under-3 offer is thinner than for older children.

    Central park playground by the Sill with several play areas across the park, cafes and restaurants nearby. Free.

    Rebuilt in July; the old climbing tower and carousel are gone, which disappointed regulars. Extensive CCTV throughout.

    Small art-deco central pool with warmer water than the others, which suits small children, plus a rooftop sauna with a mountain view for the adults.

    Closed Wednesdays. Small and crowded midday at weekends; no good for lap swimming.

  2. Hallenbad Olympisches DorfPool

    The best family pool in the city: two water slides, a heated outdoor pool with a current channel, a children's pool and a toddler pool. Family ticket for four is good value.

    Opens 10 or 11am. The big slide is sometimes out of service. Lockers need a 1 or 2 EUR coin.

    Trampoline and inflatable park in Völs, ~6km west, with supervising coaches who actively help children. Parking on site.

    Weekday opening only from 2pm. Can get crowded; book a slot online.

  2. KI - Kletterzentrum InnsbruckClimbing

    One of the biggest climbing centres in Europe, with outdoor bouldering, shoe rental from small sizes and routes for complete beginners upward.

    Expensive, and very warm inside in summer. Bouldering is set mostly on natural-feature holds, which beginners find harder to read.

  3. Skatehalle InnsbruckSkate / BMX / roller

    Huge indoor skatepark next to the climbing centre with a two-section bowl, obstacles for every level, a spectator area, toilets and showers. Around 3.50 EUR a day.

    Separate timetabled sessions for skateboard, BMX and scooter; check the schedule before going. No rental equipment.

  4. Skatepark PulverturmSkate / BMX / roller

    Free riverside park with a small bowl, plus beach volleyball, basketball and a grass area alongside. Showers and drinking water on site.

    No toilet. Benches are in full sun.

    The municipal music school, central, with a broad instrument range and some genuinely excellent teachers.

    Office hours are weekday daytime only. Administration gets mixed reviews; teaching quality varies a lot by teacher.

    Clean, well-stocked ceramic painting studio near the centre with a big choice of blanks and a fridge of drinks. Relaxing for a couple of hours.

    Closed Mondays and Sundays, with short hours on other days. Service can be brusque.

Adventure2

  1. Alpenzoo Innsbruck - TirolZoo

    Alpine-species zoo on the slope above the city: bears, wolves, ibex, owls and an aquarium of Alpine fish. Reachable by the W bus or a stop on the Hungerburg funicular.

    Built on a steep hillside with a lot of climbing; hard with a stroller and unsuitable if anyone has walking difficulties. Little shade in summer. Around 16 EUR for adults.

  2. Ponyhof HasentalPony farm

    Quiet pony farm ~8km east with well-behaved ponies, a circular walk and a big green area for a picnic. Popular for children's birthdays.

    Pony rides must be arranged by appointment in advance. Bring your own food and drink.
