    One of the best bouldering gyms in the area — spotless, bright and air-conditioned with crazy-good varied routes (slab to overhang, modern and old-school), a Kilterboard, a well-equipped gym area, a good family area and kids' courses, and a relaxing lobby with fresh healthy food

    Shoe rental is ~5€ (pricier than other Essen gyms); ~16€ day pass

    Large, clean and modern trampoline complex with a variety of well-spaced activities and interactive games, friendly knowledgeable staff (English spoken), a small café for birthday parties, ample on-site parking, an early small-kids-only slot; ~6km east

    Grip socks required; gets busy; afternoon-only on weekdays

    Cool skate bowl with plenty of obstacles for beginners to advanced skaters (and box bikes), part of the renovated Volksgarten, a graffiti wall adds to the vibe; ~6km east

    Bring a broom (leaves/dirt); parking is scarce; toddlers on balance bikes can make the bowl crowded

  5. Skatepark im Krupp-ParkSkate / BMX / roller

    A quiet, idyllic and very beginner-friendly free skatepark in the Krupp-Park with a good variety of obstacles for skateboards and inline skates, a clean well-laid-out facility with benches right by the park and an adjacent path good for run-ups

    Open-air; lots of graffiti (adds character); quiet so limited crowd/help

  6. Stuntwerk EssenClimbing

    A creative movement centre combining bouldering, parkour, a ninja obstacle course and a fitness area with high-quality equipment and interesting textured routes, plus a dedicated kids'/small-people boulder area, friendly staff and a café; kids love the ninja area

    No parking (free street parking if you can find a spot); no air conditioning; light on overhanging walls
